The cat that created purpose

How often does it happen that someone who grows up on a farm — where thousands of chickens are shipped off for meat, and thousands of turkeys are slaughtered right on the property every December in the name of tradition — grows up to stand against the very ideology they were raised inside of?

To be completely honest, growing up, I didn’t really comprehend the cruelty.

But then something happened while I was waiting for the bus on my way to school one day. A car hit a cat right in front of me and drove off. I won't describe what this did to the cat. What I can tell you is that something in me changed that day. Not gradually. Instantly.

I grew up in Eastern Europe, where compassion for animals — pets, strays, all of them — is in short supply. The stories that come out of my part of the world are the kind you wish you could unhear. Watching that cat slowly die on the side of the road didn't create my empathy for animals. It woke it and gave it a purpose.

For a long time, that empathy and my love of beauty lived in separate rooms. In college, I was studying psychology by day and falling down YouTube rabbit holes by night — tutorials, hauls, the whole beautiful chaos of the beauty world. Somewhere in there, I learned everything about animal testing and cruelty-free beauty, so I became an ethical shopper. Then I graduated, had a baby, and the world shut down. Covid gave a lot of us the same unwanted gift: time to sit with the question of what we actually wanted to do with our lives. I felt stuck — new mother in a foreign country, no clear career path, and a restless urge to make the world a better place for animals.

So I asked myself a simple question: How could I bring my two biggest passions together? Beauty. Animal welfare. What would it look like to actually combine them?

When I went looking for the answer, I found the real problem — and it wasn't a lack of cruelty-free brands. It was that finding them was exhausting. You had to cross-reference three different databases, check if a parent company tested in China, dig through forums, and still end up unsure. Going cruelty-free meant taking on a part-time research job just to buy mascara.

That was the gap. Not a missing product — a missing shortcut.

Cruelty-Free Babe exists so you don't have to do that work. Every product here is already vetted. You just shop.

It started with a cat. I couldn’t save her, so I put her on our logo. It became a brand built so that YOUR love for makeup and caring about animals never have to be in separate rooms again.
